The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, one of the largest labor unions in the United States, has announced it will not endorse a candidate in the upcoming 2024 presidential election. This marks a significant departure from the union’s past support for Democratic candidates, as it had endorsed every Democratic presidential nominee since 2000.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien explained that neither Vice President Kamala Harris nor former President Donald Trump made commitments to prioritize the interests of working people over corporate interests. The union, which represents 1.3 million members, held multiple candidate roundtables but ultimately decided against endorsing either major party candidate.
Polling among the Teamsters members showed a preference for Trump over Harris by more than 25 percent, though there was no universal support for either candidate. The decision comes as both parties vie for the support of organized labor ahead of the November election.
Labor unions have historically supported Democratic candidates, and while most large unions have endorsed Harris, the Teamsters' decision to abstain from endorsing a candidate is notable.
