A recent national poll by the Harvard Kennedy School reveals a notable shift in political preferences among younger voters aged 18-24, who are showing more conservative tendencies compared to their slightly older peers. The poll indicated that men in this age group are five points more conservative than men aged 25-29, while women aged 18-24 are about three points more conservative.
According to John Della Volpe, younger voters have been considered a more liberal demographic, but the new data suggests a changing landscape. Despite this shift, Vice President Kamala Harris continues to lead former President Donald Trump by a significant margin among younger voters. In a multi-candidate matchup, Harris leads Trump by 31 points among likely voters aged 18-29.
Polling experts suggest that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and perceived neglect by the political establishment may have influenced younger voters’ attitudes, contributing to their increased support for conservative viewpoints. However, it appears personality plays a greater role than policy in their views of Trump, with some seeing him as an "anti-hero."
While Harris maintains strong support on issues like abortion and climate change, younger voters show less alignment with her on the economy, the Israel-Hamas conflict, immigration, and national security.
