The Houthi rebels, who control large areas of Yemen, have claimed responsibility for a missile strike targeting central Israel on Sunday. According to the Israeli military, the missile landed in an uninhabited area without causing any casualties. This marks one of several attacks launched by the Houthis in solidarity with Palestinians since the onset of Israel's military offensive on Gaza, triggered by Hamas' brutal October 7 attack on Israel.
The Israeli military confirmed that the missile was fired from Yemen and stated that explosions heard in the region were the result of Israel’s missile interception system in action. Despite this, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed that the missile, a new hypersonic ballistic type, hit a military target in Jaffa near Tel Aviv, though Israeli authorities reported no damage.
The attack follows previous missile and drone strikes by the Houthis on Israel. In July, a drone strike on Tel Aviv resulted in one civilian casualty. In response, Israel bombed the Houthi-controlled port of Hodeida in Yemen.
Meanwhile, Israel continues its air and artillery assaults on Gaza, with recent strikes killing several civilians, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis. Mediation efforts by the U.S., Qatar, and Egypt to negotiate a ceasefire remain at a standstill.
