Rep. Derrick Van Orden, a Republican from Wisconsin, has expressed concerns regarding parental safety in Prairie du Chien following the arrest of Alejandro Jose Coronel Zarate, a 26-year-old Venezuelan gang member, accused of sexually assaulting a mother and her daughter. Van Orden noted that parents in the small community are now apprehensive about allowing their children to play outside. This incident has raised alarms in the area, where Van Orden's grandchildren reside less than a mile from where the alleged crimes occurred.
The Prairie du Chien Police Department reported that the assaults took place under particularly violent circumstances over a period of time. Police Chief Kyle Teynor confirmed the nature of the offenses on September 9. Prior to the incidents in Wisconsin, Coronel Zarate had been arrested and released earlier this year in Minneapolis for an unrelated offense.
Rep. Van Orden linked the alleged crimes to the Biden administration’s border policies and the support for sanctuary cities that do not cooperate with federal immigration authorities. He stated that the issue transcends political affiliation and emphasized the human rights of American citizens. The representative raised questions about why a town of 5,500 residents should fear for their children's safety, contrasting the current situation with conditions three years prior.
