On a recent episode of The View, co-host Whoopi Goldberg criticized Sen. Joe Manchin (I-WV) for his decision not to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming 2024 election. Manchin cited Harris's stance on eliminating the Senate filibuster as a key reason for his refusal to back her.
Manchin expressed concerns that removing the filibuster to pass federal legislation, such as nationwide abortion access, would drastically alter the Senate, comparing it to making the Senate like the House “on steroids.” He argued that the filibuster is essential for encouraging collaboration and dialogue within the Senate.
Goldberg responded to Manchin's stance with humor, stating, “Well, we ain’t endorsing you either!” Her comment drew applause from the audience, despite the fact that Manchin is not seeking reelection.
Manchin became an independent candidate in May after leaving the Democratic Party, expressing frustration with the lack of willingness in both parties to compromise. Similarly, Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) has also opposed eliminating the filibuster, sharing concerns about its future implications.
Manchin’s decision not to run again has set the stage for West Virginia Governor Jim Justice (R) to become the leading candidate to replace him in the Senate.
