Whoopi Goldberg, co-host of The View, discussed Sen. J.D. Vance's performance in the first and only 2024 vice presidential debate, suggesting that his approach was a result of “good acting choices.” Goldberg remarked that Vance seemed to be trying to present a different side of himself during the debate, which she perceived as a strategic shift in response to earlier missteps. She added that while people have many facets, she wouldn’t want someone who “pretends” in the White House.
Goldberg also expressed disappointment that the debate was not fact-checked. Her co-hosts shared mixed views on the debate. Sunny Hostin stated that Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) was the debate’s clear winner, highlighting his command over facts and policies. Hostin also criticized Vance for his refusal to acknowledge that former President Trump lost the 2020 election, calling him an “election denier” and unfit for office.
Alyssa Farah Griffin voiced concerns that a different vice presidential candidate, such as Pete Buttigieg or Josh Shapiro, might have performed better against Vance. Griffin also noted that Vance had a “feigned empathy” but lacked authenticity. Sara Haines pointed out Vance’s repeated questioning of Vice President Kamala Harris’s policy implementation, criticizing his failure to understand the limited role of the vice president.
