Sen. JD Vance and Gov. Tim Walz faced off in the CBS News vice presidential debate, engaging in heated exchanges over immigration and foreign policy. The debate, held in New York City, marks their only face-to-face encounter before the 2024 election.
Walz criticized former President Donald Trump for blocking a bipartisan immigration bill, which he claimed had support from both Democrats and Republicans. "We had the fairest and toughest bill on immigration," Walz said, adding that Trump's interference prevented its passage, leaving the country without crucial border reforms. He noted Vice President Kamala Harris' efforts in adding border agents and improving drug detection.
Vance countered by blaming Harris and the Biden administration for the current border crisis, citing record illegal crossings and increased fentanyl trafficking. "Kamala Harris undid Trump's border policies, leading to these issues," Vance argued.
Foreign policy also became a focal point. Vance accused the Biden-Harris administration of funding Iranian military operations through sanctions relief, asserting that over $100 billion had been funneled to Iran. He suggested that this money has been used for weapon purchases, posing a threat to the U.S. and its allies.
Walz responded by blaming Trump for withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal, arguing that the former president's actions brought Iran closer to developing a nuclear weapon.
