Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH) has addressed concerns regarding his role as former President Donald Trump’s running mate after a notable performance in a recent debate. Vance's strong showing has garnered support from Republicans who previously expressed skepticism about his selection. Presidential historian Craig Shirley noted that while he preferred another candidate, Vance’s debate performance validated Trump’s choice.
Russ Jennings, chairman of the Jackson County Republican Committee in Michigan, remarked that Vance’s appearance on the debate stage invigorated enthusiasm for Trump’s selection. Jennings had initially supported a different candidate but was impressed by Vance's performance against Governor Tim Walz (D-MN).
Despite a challenging start with a net favorability rating of minus 3 percentage points, Vance’s recent debate may open new opportunities for him. He defended populism in a polite manner, contrasting with Trump’s style. Attendees at Vance's rally praised his composure and broad understanding of various societal levels.
However, Vance's favorability remains lower than Walz’s, who has a 59% approval rating compared to Vance’s 41%. Democratic strategist Brad Bannon noted that Walz's likability might allow Vice President Kamala Harris to target swing voters more effectively. As the election approaches, Vance continues to campaign vigorously in Michigan, attempting to solidify support among voters.
