Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH) countered fact-checking attempts by CBS News moderators during the recent vice presidential debate, according to Byron York, chief political correspondent at Washington Examiner. York highlighted how Vance pushed back against moderators Norah O'Donnell and Margaret Brennan during a debate segment on immigration, calling attention to their attempts to fact-check his claims. Despite the moderators cutting Vance’s microphone during his response, York noted that former President Donald Trump’s team was pleased with Vance’s performance, comparing it favorably to his previous debate performance with ABC News.
York also pointed out that Governor Tim Walz (D-MN) had difficulty addressing questions about his trips to China, which he initially avoided before admitting to "misspeaking." York added that Vance’s most challenging question came when he was asked about his shift in support for Trump, a topic he had addressed during his 2022 Senate campaign.
Fox News podcast host Kennedy praised Vance for his response on abortion, calling it "empathetic," as Vance acknowledged the need for the Republican Party to regain trust on the issue. The debate saw agreement between Vance and Walz on several issues, including immigration policy and efforts to reduce gun violence.
Vance's performance in the debate has been widely lauded within the Republican Party, with GOP strategist Ford O'Connell calling it “one of the best VP debate performances on record."
