The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) passed a resolution calling for Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territories within 12 months. The nonbinding resolution was approved by a vote of 124-12, urging Israel to halt its presence in the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem.
The resolution also requests that Israel provide reparations for damages caused by the occupation. This follows an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which stated that the occupation violates international law, and Israeli settlements in these areas breach the Fourth Geneva Convention.
The vote indicates widespread international opposition to the occupation, with countries such as France and Mexico supporting the resolution. However, the United States, along with Israel and a few other countries, opposed the measure. Forty-three nations, including the United Kingdom and Canada, abstained.
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas expressed optimism about the resolution, hoping it will advance efforts for Palestinian independence and the creation of a state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
