A United Nations committee has raised concerns about Israel's actions in Gaza, alleging violations of the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child. According to the committee, more than 15,000 children have died in Gaza since the conflict began on October 7, following attacks led by Hamas in southern Israel that resulted in over 1,100 deaths and 250 captives.
Bragi Gudbrandsson, vice chairperson of the committee, stated that the deaths of children in Gaza represent a significant violation of the treaty. The Palestinian Ministry of Health reports that the conflict has caused over 41,000 deaths in Gaza and widespread destruction.
The UN committee urged Israel to provide support for injured children and orphans and to facilitate medical evacuations. Israel, which ratified the treaty in 1991, has argued that it does not apply to Gaza but affirmed its commitment to adhering to international humanitarian law.
