Ukrainian heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk was briefly detained by law enforcement at Krakow airport in Poland but has since been released. The incident was confirmed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who expressed concern over the situation.
Usyk, who holds titles from the WBC, WBO, and WBA, explained that the detention was due to a misunderstanding. He reassured supporters through an Instagram post, stating that the issue was quickly resolved. Usyk also praised Polish law enforcement for their professionalism throughout the process.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced that the Ukrainian government would engage with Polish authorities regarding the detention. Sybiha described the incident as disproportionate, and Polish news outlet TVP Info released footage of Usyk being led through the airport in handcuffs.
Usyk, a gold medalist from the 2012 Olympics and a key figure in Ukraine's ongoing war efforts, remains active through his charity, the Usyk Foundation. His foundation provides humanitarian aid and other support to Ukraine’s forces. Usyk's wife, Yekaterina, also confirmed on social media that the matter had been resolved.
Usyk recently made history by defeating Tyson Fury to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion since 2000.
