On September 14, 2024, Ukraine and Russia successfully exchanged 206 prisoners of war, with each side receiving 103 of its captured servicemen. Russia confirmed the return of its personnel, captured in the Kursk region, through a handover in neighboring Belarus. According to a statement from the Russian Defence Ministry, the soldiers are now receiving psychological and medical assistance, as well as the opportunity to contact their families.
Ukraine, meanwhile, welcomed back 103 of its soldiers, many of whom had been seriously injured or ill during their time in Russian captivity. The servicemen had fought in key areas such as Mariupol, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Kharkiv, and Kyiv. Among those released were two security guards from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
The exchange, reportedly brokered by the United Arab Emirates, marks the 56th such event since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. So far, 3,672 Ukrainians have been returned through similar negotiations.
