UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome to discuss strategies for addressing irregular immigration. Starmer aimed to learn more about the recent reduction in migrant arrivals to Italy and visited a national immigration coordination center alongside Italy's Interior Minister, Matteo Piantedosi, to explore potential solutions.
Since Labour's election victory in July, Starmer has committed to addressing illegal immigration and is considering various approaches, including offshore processing options. While he has rejected previous plans involving asylum seekers being sent to Rwanda, the UK government is still reviewing other methods to manage migration.
Italy, under Meloni’s leadership, has implemented agreements with Albania and Tunisia to house asylum seekers and reduce migrant crossings into Italy. These discussions come at a time of increased concern in the UK, with over 22,000 migrants crossing the English Channel this year. Starmer emphasized that preventing migration at its source is essential to managing the issue effectively.
