British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is aiming to mend the UK's strained relations with Europe following Brexit. Just two months into his term, Starmer made his first official visit to Berlin today, where he expressed his commitment to resetting ties with the continent.
"We have a unique opportunity to reshape our relationship with Europe," Starmer stated, emphasizing the need to repair the "damaged relations" left by the previous government.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz welcomed Starmer with military honors at the Chancellery in Berlin. During a joint press conference, Starmer ruled out rejoining the European Union, stating that the UK seeks a fresh start with Europe and the EU after years of conservative rule, but not at the cost of reversing Brexit or re-entering the EU Customs Union or Single Market.
Starmer's social democratic Labour Party has been in power since early July, replacing the long-standing Conservative government.
Starmer also announced plans to begin negotiations with Scholz on a bilateral agreement to strengthen economic ties, defense cooperation, and efforts against irregular migration. Additionally, he is set to meet with executives from Siemens Energy and Rheinmetall before continuing his trip to France.
