The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has expressed concern over the arrest and detention of Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of Telegram, who is an Emirati citizen. Following Durov's arrest at Paris-Le Bourget Airport in France, the UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on Tuesday, emphasizing the need for France to provide Durov with all necessary consular services.
The UAE's statement highlighted that caring for its citizens and ensuring their well-being is a top priority. The ministry confirmed it had submitted a formal request to the French government for urgent consular assistance for Durov.
Durov, originally from Russia and holding multiple citizenships, including that of the UAE, was detained as part of an ongoing investigation by French authorities. The investigation, which began last month, involves several alleged criminal violations linked to the Telegram app.
French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the arrest, stating that it was part of an independent legal process and not a political move. Macron reiterated France's commitment to freedom of expression, noting that such freedoms must operate within a legal framework to protect citizens and their rights.
France and the UAE maintain close military and diplomatic ties, further underlining the significance of the UAE's involvement in ensuring Durov receives appropriate consular support.
