At least 236 people have been confirmed dead, and 77 are missing, following severe flooding caused by Typhoon Yagi across several regions in Myanmar. The state-run Global New Light of Myanmar provided these figures, while the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has indicated that the toll may increase. OCHA estimates that approximately 631,000 people have been affected by the floods.
The typhoon, which also impacted southern China, Vietnam, and Laos, brought torrential rains to nine regions and states in Myanmar, including the capital Naypyidaw, Mandalay, and Kayah, Kayin, and Shan States. The floods come amid a larger crisis in Myanmar, where over three million people have been displaced by conflict since the February 2021 coup.
Myanmar’s government has called for international assistance, but relief efforts face challenges due to damaged roads, bridges, and disrupted communication services. OCHA has stressed the need for urgent supplies of food, water, medicine, and shelter for those affected.
