Former President Donald Trump announced during a town hall event in Flint, Michigan, that he would impose a "200% tariff" on Mexican automakers attempting to sell cars in the United States if re-elected. The event, hosted by Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, focused on issues important to Michigan voters, particularly the automotive industry.
Trump stated that the tariffs would make it difficult for cars from Mexico and China to be sold in the U.S., with the goal of keeping manufacturing jobs within the country. "We’re going to charge them... putting a 200% tariff on them, which means they’re unsellable in the United States," Trump said during his speech.
The town hall marked Trump’s first major campaign appearance following an assassination attempt that was intercepted by the Secret Service at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida. The former president was unharmed, and the suspect was apprehended.
