Former U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed plans to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during Modi’s visit to the United States next week. Trump made the announcement at a campaign event in Flint, Michigan, where he described Modi as “fantastic” but noted that India has been a “very big abuser” in trade relations with the U.S.
This meeting is scheduled to coincide with Modi’s participation in the Quad group summit, which includes leaders from Australia, Japan, and the U.S. Modi is also expected to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York and meet with members of the Indian-American community.
The relationship between Trump and Modi was notably close during Trump’s presidency. During Trump’s 2020 visit to India, Modi hosted a large rally to welcome him, which was held at one of the world’s largest cricket stadiums.
Further details of the upcoming meeting between Trump and Modi were not provided at the campaign event, but the interaction is expected to focus on continued dialogue about U.S.-India relations and trade issues.
