Former President Donald Trump has gained ground among Michigan’s younger voters, a traditionally Democratic-leaning group, according to a recent New York Times/Siena poll. The survey shows Trump leading Vice President Kamala Harris among voters aged 18-29, with 46% support compared to Harris's 45% in a head-to-head matchup. When third-party candidates were considered, the two tied at 45% each.
This represents a notable shift from the 2020 election when younger Michigan voters favored President Joe Biden by a significant margin—61% to Trump’s 37%. The shift reflects a net change of 25% since the last presidential election.
Michigan, a critical swing state, backed Trump in 2016 before flipping to Biden in 2020. The recent polling suggests a competitive race in the Wolverine State, where Harris leads Trump by just 1.3% according to the RealClearPolitics polling average. The survey, conducted from September 21-26, included 688 likely voters.
