During a campaign rally in North Carolina, former President Donald Trump criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for not negotiating with Russia to end the war in Ukraine. Trump suggested that even the “worst deal” would have been better than the current situation, referencing the loss of life and destruction in Ukrainian cities.
Trump claimed that Ukraine’s towns and cities, destroyed by the war, could not be rebuilt. He argued that Zelenskyy should have made a deal, even if it meant conceding some land, which he believes would have saved lives and preserved infrastructure. Trump added that if such a deal had been made, “everybody would be living,” and Ukraine’s landmarks would still stand.
Trump's remarks also touched on Zelenskyy's criticism of him, referencing a recent interview where the Ukrainian leader said Trump didn’t know how to end the war, despite claims otherwise. Zelenskyy had also called Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, “too radical” after Vance suggested that ceding land might be considered in exchange for a ceasefire.
Trump's comments came after Zelenskyy’s address to the UN General Assembly, where he urged world leaders to seek a “real, just peace” instead of a temporary halt in fighting.
