The Secret Service intervened after an agent noticed the barrel of an AK-47 protruding from the bushes, where the suspect was hiding. The suspect, Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, fled but was later apprehended by law enforcement. Routh faces charges related to firearm possession, including possession while a felon and possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

In his statement, Trump asserted that the DOJ and FBI are mishandling and downplaying the situation. He criticized the charges against Routh as inadequate, referring to them as a "slap on the wrist." Trump claimed that the DOJ and FBI have been pursuing him through what he described as "Weaponized Lawfare" since announcing his presidential campaign. He indicated that he believes state authorities might pursue a more rigorous prosecution of Routh.
