Kesaria Abramidze, a prominent transgender model and actress, was found dead in her apartment in Georgia, following a stabbing attack authorities described as "premeditated." The murder occurred shortly after the Georgian parliament passed a controversial bill supporting "family values," which critics have compared to Russia’s "gay propaganda" law. The new law has drawn condemnation from the European Union and rights groups for its potential to stigmatize LGBTQ individuals.
Abramidze, 37, was the first transgender woman to come out publicly in Georgia and was well-known for her social media presence, with over 500,000 Instagram followers. Police have arrested a male suspect in connection with the murder. Authorities reported that she had suffered multiple stab wounds and are investigating the crime as "premeditated murder committed with cruelty on gender grounds."
Abramidze had previously voiced concerns about domestic violence and women’s rights and had fled the country briefly after being attacked by a former partner. Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili condemned the murder, urging society to reflect on the tragedy.
The legislation passed in Georgia also includes restrictions on LGBTQ topics in education and bans gender transition and same-sex adoption, which has led to protests and heightened tensions in the country.
