Three firefighters have died in Portugal as wildfires continue to spread, raising the death toll to seven. Currently, over 50 active wildfires are burning throughout the country, with approximately 5,300 firefighters working to control the flames. Portugal has requested assistance from the European Union, leading Spain, Italy, and Greece to send water-bombing aircraft.
The fires, which started over the weekend and intensified on Monday, have injured at least 40 people, including 33 firefighters. The northwestern Aveiro district has been the hardest hit, with four deaths and significant property damage reported. More than 10,000 hectares of forest have been burned, and there are concerns that an additional 20,000 hectares may be affected.
Extreme weather conditions, including high temperatures, strong winds, and low humidity, have worsened the situation. Authorities expect the weather to improve by Wednesday, with possible rain showers forecast for Thursday.
