Approximately 10,000 voters in Georgia who had been removed from the state’s registration rolls due to inactivity re-registered to vote on the same day Vice President Kamala Harris held a rally in Atlanta. This event, which took place on September 20, coincided with Harris’s advocacy for abortion rights. The re-registration was highlighted after an analysis of voter rolls by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution revealed that many of these voters had been inactive for several years but chose to re-engage in the voting process.
Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger's office had previously removed thousands of inactive, deceased, duplicate, and out-of-state voters as part of routine election maintenance. Lauren Groh-Wargo, CEO of Fair Fight Action, a voting rights organization, emphasized that these voters had been registered before but had to take additional steps to re-register due to their inactivity.
The re-registration coincides with growing attention to Georgia's electoral landscape. The state, which President Joe Biden flipped in 2020, remains a key battleground as the 2024 election approaches. Harris’s visit to Georgia marked her third as a presidential candidate and the eighth overall visit to the state in 2023.
As Georgia ramps up efforts to "clean up" its voter rolls ahead of the upcoming election, Raffensperger’s office has sent notices to 82,077 voters who may have moved out of state, prompting them to cancel their registrations if necessary.
