The Gaza Strip is a narrow piece of land located along the Mediterranean Sea, bordering Egypt to the southwest and Israel to the east and north. It covers an area of approximately 365 square kilometers and is home to more than two million people, making it one of the most densely populated regions in the world. The population primarily consists of Palestinian Arabs, with the majority being refugees or descendants of refugees from the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
Gaza has been under various forms of governance and control throughout its history. Following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, it was administered by Egypt until 1967 when Israel took control during the Six-Day War. In 2005, Israel unilaterally withdrew its military forces and settlements from Gaza, though it retained control over the airspace, coastline, and border crossings. Since 2007, the region has been governed by Hamas, an Islamist political and militant organization that won elections in 2006 and later took full control of Gaza after violent clashes with the rival Fatah faction.
Gaza has been the center of numerous conflicts, particularly between Hamas and Israel. These conflicts have included wars and extended military operations, resulting in significant casualties on both sides and widespread destruction within the Gaza Strip. The blockade imposed by Israel and Egypt, citing security concerns, has severely restricted the movement of goods and people in and out of Gaza, leading to significant economic hardship. Gaza's economy is largely dependent on aid, and unemployment rates are among the highest in the world.
Living conditions in Gaza are challenging, with limited access to clean water, electricity, and healthcare. The region's infrastructure has been repeatedly damaged by conflict, and rebuilding efforts are often slow due to the blockade and lack of resources. Despite these challenges, Gaza remains a politically and culturally significant area for Palestinians. The situation in Gaza is frequently the subject of international diplomatic efforts, though a long-term solution to the conflict remains elusive.
