Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham has expressed strong opposition to the Biden administration's proposal for an offshore wind farm in the Gulf of Mexico. Buckingham voiced concerns during a recent podcast interview, stating that the wind farm could harm the environment along the Texas coast.
The Biden-Harris administration announced the wind energy lease sale in July, with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management auctioning areas in the Gulf on August 29, 2023. The proposed wind farm is expected to generate approximately 3.7 GW of energy, potentially powering 1.3 million homes with clean energy, according to the Department of Interior.
Buckingham argued that the project could negatively impact bird populations, marine life, and may not withstand hurricanes. She also highlighted the economic concerns for Texans, questioning the viability of the company chosen for the lease, which she claimed has limited experience with offshore wind farms.
In a letter to the administration, Buckingham stated that Texans should not be burdened with the economic costs associated with the project.
