On Saturday, tens of thousands of Israelis took to the streets, demanding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu finalize a deal with Hamas to secure the release of captives held in Gaza. The massive protests, which drew an estimated 750,000 people across the country, were centered in Tel Aviv, Haifa, and other key areas like the Karkur Junction.
Protesters expressed frustration with Netanyahu's approach, which has focused on military operations rather than negotiations. Efrat Machikawa, a protester and niece of captive Gadi Moses, said, “Our voice must join together to one huge scream: Bring the hostages with a deal. Do not risk their lives.”
The protests follow the recovery of six captives' bodies, reigniting public outrage. Netanyahu has so far rejected calls for a ceasefire deal with Hamas, which previously resulted in the release of 105 captives during a truce in November. Over 100 captives are still believed to be held in Gaza.
These demonstrations, some of the largest since October 2023, have also led to clashes with police and several arrests. Meanwhile, Israel continues its military offensive in Gaza, which has resulted in over 40,900 Palestinian deaths, and severe humanitarian shortages.
The international community, including the United States, has been pressing Israel to pursue a ceasefire and negotiate for the release of the remaining captives.
