Senator Ted Cruz has raised concerns over what he sees as an increased risk of a terrorist attack on U.S. soil, citing current border policies as a significant factor. In an interview with The Center Square, Cruz stated that the U.S. is "living on borrowed time" and argued that the country faces a greater terrorist threat now than at any time since the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Cruz attributed this heightened risk to the policies of President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and his Senate race opponent, U.S. Representative Colin Allred. Cruz criticized the administration's foreign and immigration policies, pointing to the release of over $100 billion to Iran, which he claims funds terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. He argued that these policies, combined with what he described as "open borders," have made both Texans and Americans less safe.
Cruz's concerns are rooted in reports of an increase in the number of individuals entering the U.S. through immigration programs that he deems illegal. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data, 530,000 foreign nationals from countries such as Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela have been flown into the U.S. The senator also raised alarms over the screening process for these arrivals, particularly those housed in airports, claiming a lack of proper vetting and security.
The senator further warned of a potential terrorist attack due to what he calls "lapses in border security" and "a soft invasion" of military-aged men entering the U.S. illegally. His comments follow warnings from federal officials and military experts who have expressed concerns about terrorist groups such as ISIS using smuggling rings to enter the country. FBI Director Christopher Wray, in particular, has highlighted security risks posed by Iran and China.
Cruz's opponent, Colin Allred, did not respond to requests for comment on the increased terrorist threat. However, Allred has previously stated his commitment to border security, including efforts to increase the number of border patrol agents and address issues such as fentanyl smuggling and human trafficking. In contrast, Cruz continues to argue that current policies will inevitably lead to another major terrorist attack.
Cruz has also linked terrorist threats to recent pro-Hamas protests and assassination attempts on former President Donald Trump. He called for a stronger national security approach and suggested that the only solution is to remove Biden and Harris from office, reelect Trump, and secure the border through Republican leadership. Cruz highlighted Trump-era policies that he said resulted in the lowest illegal immigration rates in decades.
With the November elections approaching, Cruz emphasized that current Democratic policies on immigration and foreign affairs pose significant risks to national security. He called for a shift in strategy to prioritize securing the border and preventing future terrorist threats.
