At least 15 people, including three civilians, were killed in suspected Israeli airstrikes on military sites in Syria, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The Syrian state news agency SANA initially reported 14 deaths following the early morning attacks. Israel has not commented on the strikes, as is its usual practice.
The attacks, carried out in three waves, targeted five military sites in Masjaf, located east of the city of Hama. According to activists, the area is known for housing pro-Iranian groups and experts involved in weapons development.
The Times of Israel reported that the attacked region serves as a base for Iranian forces and pro-Iranian militias, and has been targeted multiple times in recent years. The area also contains a research facility that, according to Israeli sources, is used by Iranian forces for the production of precision missiles.
The strikes mark another escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran-backed forces in Syria, where Israel has conducted numerous airstrikes aimed at curbing Iranian military influence in the region.
