Ryan Routh, currently under arrest on federal charges related to an alleged assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, is reported to have written a note months before the incident, expressing intent to kill Trump. According to court documents released on Monday, Routh left the note as part of a package at a friend’s house, months prior to the Sept. 15 event at Trump International Golf Club in Palm Beach, Florida.
The handwritten letter stated, “This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you. I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster. It is up to you now to finish the job; and I will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job.”
The box containing the note was opened on Sept. 18 by the recipient, after learning of the attempted assassination. Upon discovering the contents, the witness contacted law enforcement, leading to the inclusion of the note as part of the investigation.
Federal prosecutors are using the note as evidence in a hearing to support their argument for Routh’s continued pretrial detention. At this time, Routh has not been charged with attempted assassination, but remains in custody as investigations continue.
