A man accused of attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump appeared in court on Monday and was charged with federal gun crimes. The suspect, identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, is charged with possession of a firearm as a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an "obliterated" serial number.
The incident took place on Sunday at Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida. A Secret Service agent reportedly saw a rifle barrel emerging from the bushes, prompting the suspect to flee the scene. He was later apprehended in a nearby county. Law enforcement recovered the weapon, along with two backpacks, a scope, and a GoPro camera.
Ryan Wesley Routh, a builder from Hawaii with a criminal record, had posted political messages on social media. Additional charges may be brought as the investigation progresses.
President Joe Biden responded to the event, noting that the Secret Service may require more resources to effectively carry out its duties. Further details on the investigation are pending, and security measures remain in place.
