In the aftermath of the recent regional election in Brandenburg, Social Democratic Party (SPD) state premier Dietmar Woidke emphasized the party's commitment to opposing the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD). Woidke described the campaign as a "hard fight" that began over 12 months ago, asserting that the SPD was the only political force dedicated to winning against the AfD.
Woidke noted that skepticism surrounded his campaign's focus on challenging the AfD. He stated, "Others did not trust this, instead tried to fight for second place," but he believes the election results indicate that the citizens of Brandenburg reject extremist views and the divisive tactics associated with them.
The premier credited his victory to the effectiveness of his government, highlighting positive economic results for the people of Brandenburg. Looking ahead, Woidke expressed his intention to explore potential coalition partners for forming a stable government, mentioning both the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) as possible allies.
"My goal is clear," Woidke said. "It is to have a stable government that continues to ensure that in the future Brandenburg can make good progress and that its people can live better, step by step."
