The Social Democratic Party (SPD) is set to engage in talks with the newly established left-wing Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), according to SPD General Secretary Kevin Kühnert. Speaking to German public media, Kühnert emphasized the need for collaboration, stating, "It's simple mathematics now."
Founded in 2023 by Sahra Wagenknecht, a former leader of the Left party, the BSW aims to attract left-wing voters with a focus on critical stances regarding Germany's immigration policies and the country's support for Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. In the recent elections, the BSW secured third place in Brandenburg with 13.5% of the vote, surpassing the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which received 12.1%. Other parties, including Wagenknecht's former party, the Left, did not gain seats in the Potsdam state parliament.
With the SPD and BSW holding a combined 46 of the 88 seats, they have the potential to form a majority in the new state parliament. Kühnert confirmed that discussions will occur, particularly as the SPD has ruled out collaboration with the AfD and finds insufficient support from the CDU.
