Keir Starmer, born on September 2, 1962, in London, England, is a British politician and leader of the Labour Party. He was educated at Reigate Grammar School before attending the University of Leeds, where he obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree. Starmer later pursued postgraduate studies at St Edmund Hall, Oxford, completing his Bar Vocational Course. He was called to the Bar in 1987 and developed a distinguished career as a barrister, specializing in human rights law.
In 2002, Starmer was appointed Queen's Counsel (QC) and quickly became known for his work on high-profile cases. His legal career included involvement in cases that sought to challenge human rights abuses, both in the UK and internationally. He played a key role in defending activists and ensuring legal justice in areas such as the protection of the environment and civil liberties. Between 2003 and 2008, he served as a human rights advisor to the Northern Ireland Policing Board.
In 2008, Starmer was appointed Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and Head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), a role he held until 2013. During his tenure, he led significant legal reforms and modernized the CPS. Starmer oversaw a range of high-profile prosecutions, including cases related to terrorism, organized crime, and sexual offenses. He also introduced policies aimed at protecting victims of crime, particularly in cases of violence against women and children.
Starmer entered politics in 2015 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Holborn and St Pancras. A prominent figure within the Labour Party, he became Shadow Minister for Immigration in 2015 and later the Shadow Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union (Brexit Secretary) in 2016. In his role as Brexit Secretary, Starmer was responsible for outlining Labour's position on Brexit and was a key advocate for a second referendum on the UK's membership in the European Union.
In April 2020, Starmer was elected as the leader of the Labour Party, succeeding Jeremy Corbyn. His leadership has focused on rebuilding the party's reputation and increasing its appeal to a broad base of voters. Starmer has emphasized the importance of social justice, economic reform, and addressing issues such as inequality and public services.
