Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani made history on Thursday night, becoming the first player in Major League Baseball (MLB) to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season. In a record-breaking game against the Miami Marlins, Ohtani hit his 49th, 50th, and 51st home runs while also stealing two bases, marking another first—three home runs and two stolen bases in a single game.
Ohtani surpassed the previous Dodgers franchise record for home runs in a season, set by Shawn Green in 2001 with 49 home runs. "It was something I wanted to get over as quickly as possible, and it’s something that I’m going to cherish for a very long time," Ohtani said in a post-game interview.
Previously, Ohtani’s best season in terms of home runs was in 2021 when he hit 46 as a member of the Los Angeles Angels. He joined the Dodgers last December, signing a 10-year, $700 million contract.
