Israeli airstrikes have hit a school in Gaza’s Shati refugee camp, killing at least seven people, according to the Palestinian Civil Defence. The Kafr Qasim School, located west of Gaza City, was being used as a shelter for displaced civilians when it was struck by an airstrike on Sunday. The attack left several people injured, with some in critical condition, said Mahmud Bassal, a spokesperson for the Palestinian Civil Defence.
The incident occurred a day after another airstrike targeted a different school in northern Gaza, killing 22 people, including 13 children and six women. Both schools had been converted into shelters for civilians displaced by ongoing violence in the region.
The Israeli military stated that the airstrike targeted Hamas fighters operating within the compound of the school, though no evidence was provided to support this claim. The military further explained that it used precision weaponry and intelligence information in an effort to minimize harm to civilians. However, no details on the casualties or damage were disclosed in the statement.
Israel has targeted schools and civilian infrastructure on several occasions, citing the presence of Hamas fighters in these locations, but has rarely provided proof for such claims.
