A U.S. Secret Service agent has been accused of sexual misconduct involving a campaign aide to Vice President Kamala Harris, according to a report released on Wednesday. The Office of the Vice President acknowledged the incident, emphasizing their commitment to the safety of staff and a zero-tolerance policy towards sexual misconduct.
A spokesperson for the Secret Service confirmed that the Office of Professional Responsibility is investigating the allegation. The agent in question has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing. "The Secret Service holds its personnel to the highest standards," the spokesperson said, adding that further details would be withheld pending the investigation's outcome.
This development coincided with the release of an interim report from the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. The report highlighted a series of failures by the Secret Service surrounding former President Donald Trump's outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July, where an attempt on Trump's life occurred.
Both incidents have drawn attention to the internal challenges facing the Secret Service as it works to address concerns over conduct and security measures.
