Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced on Thursday that he will take steps to avert a government shutdown after the House failed to pass a continuing resolution. The resolution, which included the SAVE Act, was defeated by a vote of 202-220, with 14 Republicans and 206 Democrats voting against it.
Schumer stated on the Senate floor that the Senate would step in due to the lack of progress in the House. He filed cloture on a legislative vehicle, enabling the Senate to act on a spending package if bipartisan cooperation with Speaker Johnson does not take place.
By filing cloture, the Senate can set up procedural votes on a spending bill as early as next week. Schumer highlighted that both parties will work in the coming days to find a solution to keep the government operational and stressed the Senate’s preparedness to act swiftly.
Negotiations in both the House and Senate are ongoing as lawmakers aim to prevent a government shutdown before the upcoming deadline.
