Mexican boxing champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez retained his unified super middleweight titles with a unanimous decision over Edgar Berlanga in Las Vegas. Alvarez knocked Berlanga down in the third round and maintained control throughout the 12 rounds. The judges scored the bout 118-109, 118-109, and 117-110 in favor of Alvarez.
Alvarez applied pressure throughout the fight, while Berlanga remained on the defensive. In the ninth round, Alvarez landed a strong right hand. Berlanga, who was warned for an intentional headbutt, taunted Alvarez in the final round but was unable to achieve the stoppage he had predicted.
Alvarez’s left hook in the third round sent Berlanga to the canvas, but he quickly got back up. Despite his efforts, Berlanga struggled against Alvarez's consistent body shots. Alvarez, now 62-2-2 (39 KOs), retained his WBA, WBC, and WBO belts.
After the fight, Alvarez addressed questions about his future, saying, "Now what are they going to say? I fight younger fighters?" This marks Alvarez's fifth consecutive decision win, with his last knockout in November 2021.
Berlanga, now 22-1, showed respect for Alvarez, saying, "Since I was a kid, I looked up to him."
On the undercard, Erislandy Lara retained his WBA middleweight title with a ninth-round stoppage of Danny Garcia. Lara improved to 31-3-3, while Garcia fell to 37-4.
Alvarez said he will rest with his family before deciding on his next steps.
