Florida prosecutors have formally charged Ryan Wesley Routh with attempted assassination in connection with an alleged plot to kill former President Donald Trump at a West Palm Beach golf course earlier this month. The case has been assigned to Judge Aileen Cannon, who was appointed by Trump and previously presided over the federal classified documents case against him.
Initially, Routh faced charges of obliterating a firearm's serial number and possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. However, the charges have been updated to include attempted assassination, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a violent crime, and assaulting a federal officer.
During a news conference on Tuesday, Attorney General Merrick Garland described the attempted assassination as a "heinous act," expressing relief for Trump’s safety. Garland reaffirmed the Justice Department's commitment to ensuring accountability in this matter.
Routh, aged 58, is reported to be linked to the second assassination attempt on Trump this year. He is scheduled for arraignment in court on Monday.
