A Royal Navy service member tragically died after a helicopter crashed into the English Channel during night-flying exercises on Wednesday near Dorset. The incident involved a Merlin Mk4 helicopter, which was participating in a training operation with the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth.
According to a statement from the Royal Navy, three personnel were aboard the helicopter when it ditched into the sea. Rescue efforts, assisted by HM Coastguard, were swiftly launched. While two individuals were rescued without serious injury, the third, whose identity remains undisclosed, lost their life.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed his sorrow, stating he was "deeply saddened to hear of the tragic death." He extended his condolences to the family and paid tribute to those involved in the rescue operation. Defence Secretary John Healey also lamented the "dreadful news," sharing his sympathies with the victim’s family, friends, and colleagues.
First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Ben Key remarked on the significant loss to the Naval community, extending his thoughts and prayers to the bereaved family.
A full investigation into the cause of the crash is now underway. HMS Queen Elizabeth, the Navy’s largest and most powerful vessel, remains operational at sea.
