Republican lawmakers are calling on the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate reports related to election integrity, particularly concerning noncitizens who allegedly attempted to vote in U.S. elections.
The demand follows earlier requests made to Garland that the lawmakers claim have not been adequately addressed. Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), who led the effort alongside Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-TN), emphasized the importance of ensuring American citizens have confidence in election security. They referenced incidents in states like Virginia and Texas, where thousands of noncitizens reportedly attempted to register to vote, including over 6,300 removals from Virginia voter rolls and an additional 6,500 in Texas between 2022 and 2023.
The letter expressed concern that there has been no public indication of DOJ investigations into these cases, nor any prosecutions of noncitizens. Additionally, the lawmakers inquired whether the DOJ has reached out to election officials in Virginia and Texas for further information.
As the November elections approach, election integrity has become a focal point for Republicans, with former President Donald Trump and others advocating for measures like the SAVE Act, which seeks to prohibit noncitizens from voting in federal elections. The act faced opposition from House Democrats, who raised concerns about its implications for election accessibility.
