Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has responded to criticisms regarding the United States Postal Service's (USPS) capability to manage mail-in ballots for the upcoming elections. In a statement on Thursday, DeJoy asserted that concerns from former President Donald Trump and other critics are unfounded.
"My response to everyone who says that we're not prepared for the election is that they're wrong," DeJoy stated. He acknowledged the significant pressure election officials face during the election cycle but emphasized that the USPS is fully prepared to handle mail-in ballots.
DeJoy noted the importance of maintaining public confidence in the reliability of the Postal Service as the election approaches. He stated, "We recognize that the American public will become increasingly alarmed if there is ongoing dialogue that continues to question the reliability of the Postal Service for the upcoming elections."
In contrast, Trump recently suggested that the postal system is struggling and referred to potential financial losses due to mail-in ballots. Concerns have also been raised by the National Association of State Election Directors, which wrote to DeJoy on September 11 regarding issues such as an increase in undeliverable mail. Additionally, Republican lawmakers, including Rep. Buddy Carter, have expressed worries about the timely processing of mail-in ballots.
