Apollo Quiboloy, a prominent Philippines preacher and founder of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ church, entered a plea of not guilty on charges of child abuse and human trafficking during his arraignment in Manila on September 13, 2024. The 74-year-old, who once claimed to be the "anointed son of God," was arrested following a massive operation involving over 2,000 security personnel at his church's compound in Davao.
Quiboloy, appearing in court handcuffed and wearing an orange detainee shirt, was heavily protected with a bulletproof helmet and vest, indicating the high-profile nature of his case. His lawyer, Israelito Torreon, affirmed Quiboloy's innocence, with a pre-trial set for October.
The allegations against Quiboloy include the sexual abuse of children, with reports suggesting that victims were as young as 12 or 13 when the abuse allegedly occurred. These victims were reportedly manipulated into believing that their actions were necessary to "serve God" and secure their passage to heaven. Two of the alleged victims have confirmed their willingness to testify against Quiboloy.
Additionally, Quiboloy faces charges in the United States for conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking, among other related offenses. However, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has stated that the focus remains on the local charges rather than extradition to the US at this stage.
