Australian driver Oscar Piastri claimed victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday, marking his second-ever Formula One win. The 23-year-old's performance propelled his team, McLaren, to the top of the constructors' championship, overtaking Red Bull, which had dominated the title for the past two seasons.
Piastri's victory was nothing short of spectacular, as he fended off a tough challenge from Ferrari's Charles Leclerc throughout the race. The key moment came when Piastri made an aggressive lunge on the inside of Leclerc about a third of the way through the race, seizing the lead and maintaining his position despite heavy pressure from the Ferrari driver.
“It was one of the better races of my career,” Piastri said in his post-race interview.
Leclerc held onto second place as his Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez collided late in the race, sending them both into the wall and ending their day prematurely. The race concluded under a virtual safety car, with Mercedes' George Russell capitalizing on the chaos to finish third.
Lando Norris, Piastri’s McLaren teammate, had started the race from 15th after a difficult qualifying session but managed to fight his way up to fourth place, finishing just ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who came in fifth. This result allowed Norris to narrow the points gap between him and Verstappen in the drivers' championship, though he still trails the Dutchman by 59 points.
