Dr. Jay Varma, who served as New York City’s senior public health adviser during the COVID-19 pandemic, has been implicated in attending large gatherings while advocating for strict social distancing measures. A recent video compilation, shared by conservative commentator Steven Crowder, features recorded conversations in which Varma discusses attending sex parties and a large dance event while New Yorkers were urged to avoid such gatherings.
Varma, who held his position from April 2020 to May 2021 under then-Mayor Bill de Blasio, claimed responsibility for implementing policies including a vaccine mandate. In the video, he mentions how these policies affected the ability of Brooklyn Nets player Kyrie Irving to participate in games.
In response to the recordings, Varma acknowledged their authenticity but stated that his comments were taken out of context. He described himself as a target of a right-wing organization and defended his efforts to promote vaccination against COVID-19. Varma has continued to advocate for public health measures, including mask-wearing, even after leaving city government.
The revelations have prompted calls for an investigation by Democratic City Councilman Robert Holden, who questioned the appropriateness of Varma’s actions during a period of strict lockdowns. Varma currently works as the executive vice president and chief medical officer at SIGA Technologies.
