A nonprofit organization is seeking criminal charges against former President Donald Trump and Ohio U.S. Senator J.D. Vance, following their repeated claims regarding Haitian immigrants in Springfield. The Haitian Bridge Alliance, represented by The Chandra Law Firm, has filed an affidavit calling for local authorities to take legal action.
Trump and Vance have made controversial statements alleging that Haitian immigrants in Springfield have been killing and eating pets, a narrative that city and state officials, as well as multiple news outlets, have debunked. The nonprofit’s filing seeks charges including disrupting public services, making false alarms, complicity, telecommunications harassment, and aggravated menacing.
Lead attorney Subodh Chandra, representing Guerline Jozef, cofounder of the Haitian Bridge Alliance, stated that the Haitian community in Springfield has been living in fear due to these claims. Chandra added that Trump and Vance should be held accountable for their actions, emphasizing that anyone else making similar statements would likely face legal consequences.
Under Ohio law, a private citizen can request criminal charges by filing an affidavit with a judge, prosecutor, or magistrate, who then reviews the facts to determine if charges should be filed.
Both Trump and Vance have continued to promote their claims, despite repeated denials from local and state officials.
