New York Magazine has placed political writer Olivia Nuzzi on leave after disclosing a personal relationship with a reporting subject, allegedly involving 2024 presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The magazine cited this as a breach of its standards regarding conflicts of interest and transparency.
Nuzzi issued a statement acknowledging that communications with a former reporting subject, which were not physical, turned personal. She admitted that she should have disclosed the relationship sooner to avoid any appearance of conflict. Nuzzi expressed regret for not doing so and apologized to her colleagues.
The relationship is alleged to involve Kennedy, although a spokesperson for him denied any personal involvement, stating they only met once for an interview that led to a critical article.
New York Magazine confirmed the leave in a statement, stating that had they known of the relationship, Nuzzi would not have continued covering the presidential campaign. The magazine also launched an internal review of her published work, finding no evidence of inaccuracies or bias, but a third-party review is ongoing to ensure further transparency.
