Investigators are uncovering new leads in the murder of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, who was fatally shot outside the Hilton Hotel in Manhattan on Wednesday morning. The attack occurred shortly before Thompson was due to attend his company’s annual investor conference.
Surveillance footage shows the gunman approaching Thompson from behind and opening fire. Despite his weapon jamming briefly, the masked assailant fired multiple shots before escaping on an e-bike toward Central Park. Police believe the killer had been "lying in wait" for several minutes prior to the attack.
Evidence suggests the suspect may have traveled to New York on a bus from Atlanta in late November. Authorities are reviewing ticket purchases to identify him. Police also released images showing the suspect smiling at an Upper West Side hostel, where he reportedly used a fake ID. His room has been searched, and DNA analysis is underway on items found in a nearby Starbucks.
Notably, investigators discovered the words "deny," "defend," and "depose" written on the ammunition—terms associated with criticisms of the health insurance industry. While the motive remains unclear, police are treating the shooting as targeted.
Thompson's family expressed their grief, calling his death a "senseless killing" and remembering him as a loving father and generous man. The suspect remains at large, and the investigation is ongoing.
